HDR Test

What the report says

A browser can answer a few standard questions about the screen it is drawing on. This page asks five of them and shows the answers as they come back. "Reported" means the browser says that mode is available to it right now. "Not reported" means it is not, or that the browser does not know. Some browsers do not understand these questions at all, and the page says so rather than guessing.

What it does not tell you

A "reported" answer is not a measurement and not a certificate. It does not say how bright your display can go, how deep its black is, how much of a wide color range it really covers, or whether HDR content will look good. A screen that reports high dynamic range may still be an entry-level panel that accepts an HDR signal and then shows it with ordinary brightness and contrast. A screen that reports nothing may still handle HDR video well in a media player outside the browser.

The answers also depend on the operating system, the connection, and whether HDR is switched on in the display settings. Turning HDR on in the system, and then reloading this page, often changes what is reported.

Checking HDR properly

Real judgment of HDR needs content made for it, played in a player that supports it, on a display with HDR switched on: bright highlights that stand out against deep shadows, without the whole picture looking washed out. Manufacturers' HDR labels describe tested brightness and color levels, which no browser page can check. For the parts a browser can show honestly, use the Screen Contrast Test and the Color Accuracy Test.
