Computers have been the thing since I was about eight — not a hobby so much as an obsession. While friends were working out how to use software, I was inside the case figuring out what each part did. That turned into a Computer Science degree, and a day job as a manager at a tech company. Twenty-five years on, it hasn't worn off.
ScreenTail exists because bad pixels bother me more than is reasonable. One dead dot on a screen I use every day is something I'll notice every single day. Once I started building tools to find them properly, it turned into forty-three of them.
I'm not a display engineer. I've never worked for a panel manufacturer, I'm not a colour scientist, and I've never professionally calibrated a display. What I am is a tinkerer with an unreasonable tolerance for detail — if something's broken I'll open it up rather than replace it. That isn't expertise, and I won't dress it up as any. It is, though, why every test here was built and validated properly rather than approximated, and why the method is written down where you can check it.
