What it makes

Choose a pattern — stripes (vertical, horizontal or diagonal), dots or a grid — two colors and a pattern size, and Save wallpaper makes a PNG of that pattern repeating across the whole image. Plain makes a single color instead. Edges are not softened, so every pixel in the file is exactly one of your two colors. The preview above has the image's own shape and is drawn by the same code as the file.

The pattern size is a share of the image's shorter side, so a pattern keeps its look on a phone and on a monitor: a stripe is 1/48 of that side at Small, 1/24 at Medium and 1/12 at Large. Image sizes run from 16 × 16 to 7680 × 4320, with common monitor and phone sizes one press away and This screen filling in the size your browser reports.

Why stripes are kept to close colors

High-contrast stripes can be uncomfortable to look at for some people. So for stripes and grids, this page keeps the two colors close in brightness: their relative luminance — how bright a color is, on a scale from 0 for black to 1 for white — must differ by less than 0.1. Black and white differ by 1, so black-and-white stripes cannot be made here. There is no high-contrast preset, and the starting colors differ by less than half the limit.

The figure 0.1 comes from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which count a change of 10% of that scale as significant when they define a flash. Here it is a conservative design limit for this tool, not a medical threshold, and staying under it does not mean a pattern suits everyone. If your two colors are further apart, the page says so, shows the nearest allowed pattern color in the preview, and makes no file until the pair is within the limit. Dots are not lines, so the limit does not apply to them, and Plain makes a single color. Nothing on this page moves.

The image is drawn by your browser and saved straight from it: nothing is uploaded, and ScreenTail keeps no copy. Before it is saved, the page reads it back to confirm its size; if your browser cannot make the size you asked for, the page says so instead of handing you a broken file.
