Amber Screen

What the amber screen shows

There is no single standard definition of amber: the name covers a range of golden yellows and oranges. ScreenTail uses #FFBF00 as its amber preset: red fully on, green at level 191 out of 255, and blue at 0. The page, its color swatch, and the value label all use this same value.

Amber sits between the Yellow Screen and the Orange Screen: warmer than yellow, lighter than orange.

As a warm backdrop or accent light

   Open it full screen. The browser toolbars add white and gray around the color, so fullscreen gives an even amber.

   Place the display close. A screen is a small, weak light source, so its glow fades quickly with distance.

   Use it as an accent. Amber light on a face gives a strong golden tint. For a video call, keep a neutral light in front of you and use the amber screen behind you or to the side.

   Set the strength with brightness. Lower the display's brightness for a softer glow. A camera's automatic white balance may also reduce the tint.

Limits

The amber you see depends on the panel, its color settings, and any night mode or color filter that is on. The light still comes from the display's own subpixels, so it is a colored screen, not an amber lamp.

Amber or warm white?

The Warm White Screen (#FFB86D) is the color of 3000K light. It lights all three subpixels, with green and blue at lower levels, so it reads as a warm white. Amber has blue at 0, so it reads as a clear golden color. Choose warm white for soft, nearly neutral light, and amber when you want the color itself to show.
